Fish Mulakittath in clay pot / Malabar Style




Fish mulaku curry/Fish mulakittath is a common fish recipe all over Kerala.It is a spicy preparation of fish and thus a very good combination with rice, uppuma etc. It has a lot of varieties from North to South.Here i am sharing with you the Malabar style of preparing Fish Mulaku curry using tamarind.

Any fish                                                -  6-8 medium pieces
Coconut oil                                         - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds                                  - ½ tsp
Fenugreek seeds                                     - ½ tsp
Fresh Curry leaves                             - a few
Chopped Shallots                          - 1 tbsp
Crushed ginger and garlic             - 1 tbsp
Green chilli                                         - 1
Red chilli powder                             - 1 tbsp
Coriander powder                           - ½ tbsp
Turmeric powder                             - ½ tsp
Tamarind                                             - 1 ball (of size of a lemon)
Water                                                   - 3 cups
Salt                                                         - to taste
Method:-
Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water for at least ½ an hour.

Take the juice of tamarind in a bowl using water.

Heat coconut oil in a clay pot / chatti.
Splutter mustard seeds and fenugreek and shallots.
Add curry leaves.

Sauté crushed ginger and garlic.

Lower the flame, add red chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder and mix well. Be careful not to change the colour of powders dark due to overheating.

Pour the tamarind water into it soon and bring the flame back to high. Add salt to taste.

Once it starts to boil, add fish pieces carefully.

After 5 min, lower the flame and cook until the oil comes out of the curry.

Serve hot with rice, uppuma etc....
